My friend Lowry

 My friend Lowry passed almost a decade ago. I met her in December 2007 and then the two of us travelled through Shanghai. We talked about cats and people. We even had yummy noodles at a tiny restaurant. Time flies, and I miss her a lot. Shanghai is the only Mainland Chinese city I've ever been to. Though there are many things I dislike about China, my trip was very positive, and I can only revisit my fond memories through rose-tinted glasses.

It is natural to embrace democracy. In the grand scheme of things, societies have tended to liberalize and opened up. This is how the world has progressed.  Many of the so-called activists from Hong Kong who are now settled in Western countries are huge disappointments to the democracy-loving public. Take Nathan Law as an example.  He had done nothing of value since moving to the UK except for his random postings. It seems like that he has not taken any real job. Recently he was dismissed from his friends' group due to a sexual harassment allegation by a woman.   We can't avoid politics, but should really transcend them. People with different political views work hard and support themselves. Decent people do not leech off others.

I have stopped talking to a couple of friends who spread fake news about the HK government.  I understand that these people detest the government. However, no matter how negative your sentiments are towards the government, you should never propagate urban legends like "thousands of people disappeared" in 2019. A former friend even smears people challenging these unfounded myths by labelling them as "$0.50/paid shills." I was truly taken aback by their violent reactions to people challenging their discourse, because many of such people are in fact well-educated and are otherwise rational and sane. They now lost credibility in the eyes of the rational public.
